Five Years of Building Inclusive AI in Canada
AN IMPACT STORY
Five years ago, the Athena Pathways project set out to make British Columbia’s artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem stronger, smarter, and more inclusive. The initiative recognized a dual challenge: a growing demand for AI, machine learning, and data science expertise—and a critical gender gap limiting both innovation and accuracy in the field. Supported by DIGITAL, and led by AInBC, Athena Pathways brought together Simon Fraser University, Northeastern University, Careteam Technologies, D-Wave, KPMG, MetaOptima, Teck Resources, the University of British Columbia, and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) to deliver new AI-focused courses and learning opportunities designed specifically to support women entering the sector.
The results have been transformative. More than 570+ women participated, 320 scholarships were awarded, and 70 mentorships were arranged through the program. Partnerships expanded significantly, with 17 new organizations joining the effort, and 20 participants were directly hired by employer partners—proof that Athena’s model of education, mentorship, and industry connection works.
Closing the Gender Gap in AI
Artificial intelligence depends on data—and data depends on diversity. Without representation, bias can be built directly into models that shape everything from healthcare diagnostics to hiring algorithms. Athena Pathways tackled this issue head-on, ensuring that women play a larger role not just in using AI, but in designing, coding, and leading it.
The project’s courses and workplace pathways focused on building real-world expertise in the science and commercialization of AI, machine learning, and data science (AI/ML/DS). By equipping women with the skills and mentorship to thrive, Athena not only deepened Canada’s AI talent pool—it also helped ensure that the next generation of technology better reflects the society it serves.

Long-Term Impacts
Athena’s influence reaches far beyond its initial objectives, leaving a lasting mark on Canada’s AI ecosystem. The project has strengthened collaboration between academia and industry in B.C., advanced diversity across the nation’s growing AI sector, and created sustainable impact through new courses and curricula that continue beyond the project’s funding. It has inspired follow-on initiatives, such as the Athena Digital Leaders program, and helped develop critical skills for over 570+ women through education, mentorship, and employment support. In addition, Athena has raised awareness and sparked community-wide support for greater inclusion in technology, ensuring its benefits extend well into the future.
