The Problem
Fruit growers lack access to accurate, real-time, tree-level data needed to make precise decisions about crop management, plant health, and input use. Traditional methods are labour-intensive, imprecise, and often reactive, leading to inefficient chemical application, higher costs, lower yields, and environmental strain.
How We Are Solving It
This project, led by Vivid Machines, and in collaboration with Botden Orchards and Hol Spraying Systems, represents a groundbreaking step forward in modern agriculture. This initiative brings together partners to revolutionize how fruit crops are managed and grown by integrating advanced artificial intelligence, computer vision, and machine learning directly into growers’ everyday operations. Through the development of proprietary technology such as the Vivid XV system, the project captures real-time, tree-specific data beneath crop canopies, information that was previously difficult and labour-intensive for growers to access using traditional methods.
By leveraging this technology, the project provides actionable insights on crop load management, plant health, tree vigour, and fruit growth, enabling growers to optimize every aspect of orchard management on a per-tree basis. These insights are seamlessly integrated into precision variable-rate agricultural sprayers, allowing for highly targeted treatments that reduce chemical use, increase yields, and improve fruit quality. The initiative also includes the development and commercialization of cutting-edge machine learning models for early disease detection in apples, as well as expansion into new fruit varieties, maximizing its impact across diverse global regions.
The project is not only transforming individual orchards but also cultivating global alliances with agricultural equipment manufacturers and key supply chain partners. These collaborations are accelerating the adoption of real-time, data-driven agriculture, helping address pressing challenges such as labour shortages and environmental sustainability. By establishing Canada as a leader in agricultural AI, the project is creating new economic opportunities, supporting a resilient and sustainable food system, and laying the foundation for the next generation of smart farming technology worldwide.
