Indigenous Pathfinders in AI
Combining Indigenous values with AI training and adoption.
Project Overview
Updated May 30, 2025
The Problem
Indigenous Canadians currently represent 5% of the Canadian population, yet only 1% of Canada’s technology workforce is comprised of Indigenous talent, with even fewer estimated to enter the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI).1
How We Are Solving It
Led by Mila in collaboration with Indspire and CIFAR, this project aims to provide the Indigenous Pathfinders program, Canada’s first AI initiative exclusively for Indigenous talent, to 22 Indigenous participants across Canada.
Indigenous Pathfinders provides technical training, AI insights, hands-on projects and an incorporation of Indigenous cultural values to guide ethical and meaningful AI usage for participants. By bridging Indigenous perspectives with AI technologies, the program seeks to nurture a new generation of Indigenous professionals equipped to tackle and create opportunities in their communities and beyond.
