Responsible AI Adoption for Social Impact (RAISE)

Promoting responsible AI adoption in Canada’s non-profit sector.

Project Overview

Updated June 5, 2025.

The Problem

Canada’s non-profit sector is comprised of over 170,000 organizations across the country, yet faces a critical digital skills and technology gap for the current movement of AI adoption. Only 4.8% of non-profits report using AI, less than the private sector’s 9.5% adoption rate, with less than 1% of the non-profit workforce comprised of tech-related roles.1

How We Are Solving It

Led by the Human Feedback Foundation in collaboration with Creative Destruction Lab and Toronto Metropolitan University, this project aims to develop and pilot a training program that equips individuals working for non-profit organizations with the skills and tools needed to responsibly adopt AI.

The program pilot will aim to upskill over 500 participants across Canada in the non-profit sector on how to amplify their impacts and deliver on their missions through the responsible adoption of AI. The program will include the delivery of micro-credentials on responsible AI governance and usage, and target systemic AI adoption through upskilling pilots with large non-profits across Canada including the Canadian Cancer Society, CAMH Foundation, CanadaHelps, Furniture Bank and Achēv. The RAISE project will additionally include development of a responsible AI governance framework to help guide adoption throughout the sector.
