Transforming Canada’s aquaculture industry through digital skills training.
Project Overview
Updated June 5, 2025
The Problem
The aquaculture industry in Canada is undergoing rapid transformation from growing demand for sustainability and operational efficiencies. Traditional industry practices are not able to meet this rising demand, and there is a need to ensure that aquaculture companies have access to a trained, future-ready workforce.
How We Are Solving It
Led by Excel Career College in collaboration with the B.C. Salmon Farmers Association, the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce and Vancouver Island First Nations and regional development organizations along British Columbia’s coast; this project aims to develop and deliver its AI for Aquaculture training program that integrates AI, machine learning (ML), internet-of-things (IoT) and other digital technologies into aquaculture practices.
Participants will gain skills to optimize fish health, improve water quality, and enhance operational efficiency through the usage of AI and digital technologies. The program will combine traditional knowledge and traditional Indigenous knowledge with training on cutting-edge digital skills, creating a future-ready workforce that promotes sustainability and also empowers Indigenous communities with innovative and inclusive practices in oyster farming, salmon hatcheries and fish processing.
The project will seek to provide a successful blueprint for scaling the training across Canada.
