The Problem
The roughly 2260 acres of Malahat Nation lands is situated between Victoria and Mill Bay, with reserve lands located on the western shore of Saanich Inlet nestled beneath a nearby mountain range commonly known as The Malahat. This large, diverse landscape requires an innovative approach to tackling the Nation’s housing challenge.
Malahat Nation is just one example of other diverse communities and Nations across British Columbia facing pressures to quickly and efficiently plan and deliver new housing. There is then significant potential to leverage new digital technologies to produce faster, more efficient and sustainable housing solutions that incorporate the unique diversity and values of every community.
How We Are Solving It
Led by Malahat Nation in collaboration with Archistar and Zaha Hadid Architects; this project will seek to support Malahat Nation as they embark on the development of one of Canada’s leading master-planned communities.
Master community planning involves large-scale residential development designed with long-term, comprehensive planning; offering integrated amenities, infrastructure and housing. As part of developing one of Canada’s leading master-planned communities, Malahat Nation needs to streamline and fast-track the development planning and assessment of building and planning codes. This project will use Archistar’s proven 3D Generative AI Building Design technology to support Malahat Nation in revolutionizing their building design and approval process by leveraging digital advancements. Malahat lands will act as host to the pilot with the consortium aiming to streamline and expedite the planning and assessment of multiple masterplan scenarios by enhancing the efficiency, accuracy and creativity of master planning and design compliance using a cloud-based, automated platform powered by 3D generative AI.
The integration of 3D generative design into the master planning process represents a significant leap forward in the field of urban development and housing design. The platform leverages advanced algorithms and AI to generate 3D optimized building and urban designs based on specific criteria and constraints, such as zoning laws, environmental factors and community needs across multiple masterplan scenarios. This allows for architects and planners to explore increased design alternatives; reduce planning time; optimize resources for enhanced sustainability; customize for community-centric designs; and increase housing productions by digitizing the master planning process and creating a standardized framework for compliance.
Ultimately, this project will aim to set a new standard for urban development, combining technological innovation with a Nation-led approach to commitments of sustainability, efficiency and community engagement.
